Glorfindel
quietly observed the impressive suite of rooms that Lord Elrond
had given him. It was easy to see that before his arrival
the rooms had been reserved for visiting dignitaries. The
main room was light and airy with large carved windows and
the bedchamber was filled with soft light; its walls were
green and silver and its roof was gold. They were elaborate
and attractively furnished yet still impersonal and utterly
lacking in character.
He
had not brought much with him from Valinor - indeed he had
not had a great deal to bring. All of his possessions had
been lost when Gondolin fell and he had not been reborn long
enough to acquire a great deal again. All he had were a few
clothes, some small trinkets and a couple of books. And one
more special possession that could change things for the better.
He
moved across the room, going to the wooden trunk in the corner
that contained all he had brought with him. Pushing aside
the few items that remained he reached to the bottom for a
carefully-tied bundle of fabric and pulled it out.
Hoisting
it under one arm, he selected one of the bland tapestries
that hung on the wall and swiftly pulled it down, casting
it carelessly aside. Unrolling the fabric he held, he deftly
hung it in the now empty space. To his delight he found his
guess had been correct and that it fit perfectly.
Stepping
back, he admired the colour and design of the banner of the
House of the Fountain that now adorned his wall. It seemed
to him that the whole room was brightened by its presence.
Better.
Much better.
